Wonders

One Sunday our Pastor started his sermon with a story about a very young, big city girl who was taken for a train ride into the country by her mother. As they rode along, the little girl looked out of the window and saw wonderful things she had never seen before, like green trees, colorful flowers, streams, a bright blue lake, and cows, horses and even a goat. She could hardly sit still as each moment something new and different appeared before her eyes. Her mother asked what she was so excited about. "Look at all the things out there with colors and shapes, and the animals. I never saw such wonders," was her answer.

I thought of all the wonders I had seen in my youth. Such things as beautiful forests with green trees, some with almost purple cones on them, and snow-covered mountains, bright blue lakes, and wild animals, like deer, elk, rabbits, rodents, (some rodents we called rock rabbits) and domesticated animals like dairy cows and horses on my friend's farm, and pets like dogs, cats, guinea pigs. In the streams and lakes I saw rainbow and Eastern brook trout. I had often wondered how and why these were here.

There were many other things that came to mind also, that day like when working in the mines, I wondered what saved me from falling down a timber shaft or being caught in a cave-in, by taking me fishing on the day my work area caved in and a timberman lost his life. And I thought of the wonderful parents, relatives, friends I had or have--and the girl that made me know God, became my wife and mothered our four precious children.

The little girl saw many wonders in her train ride--I too have seen many wonders in my ride through the years.

Afterthought

Among the many wonders I have seen are computers like this one I'm using--I actually feel guilty when I ask it to make corrections, or to recall icons just after I press QUIT on the work I was doing.
